Popeye Shake

11 Mar

Spinach smoothie

Since moving the clocks forward (and losing an hour of sleep) I’ve been feeling a little sluggish. Fortunately, I experimented with some ingredients and discovered this pick-me-up shake that even Popeye will surely love.

I’ve seen countless features lately about healthy beverages, from Miranda Kerr’s tahitian noni drink to Hollywood’s favorite green juice. While this shake doesn’t contain any unusual ingredients like some of its more famous counterparts, using spinach in a sweet smoothie was a change of pace for me.  It was the first time I’ve utilized spinach in something that isn’t savory. I’ve always been somewhat intimidated by this superfood and haven’t used it much in other than a run-of-the-mill salad. This smoothie recipe, however, is definitely a keeper. While I didn’t have any on hand, fresh berries would be a delicious and healthy substitution. Who knows, maybe with some added confidence, I’ll graduate to using other nutrient-rich foods like kale or chia seeds in shakes. Stay tuned for that :)

Do you have any suggestions for future smoothie recipes? I would love to hear about them.

I always look forward to a good blended milkshake, but daily trips to a smoothie shop can really start to add up. So I came up with an easy-to-make shake (and a silly name!) that B drinks to the very last drop, which must mean it’s good.

I appreciate the added protein of using Greek yogurt over regular yogurt, and the additional calcium in almond milk versus dairy milk
